Kay Hairston, BSN, RN, CCM, CNLCP, Life Care Planner, attended the annual American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners (AANLCP) Conference held in Peachtree City, Georgia at the beginning of April. Located thirty minutes outside of Atlanta, the quiet community of Peachtree City welcomed conference attendees with a big dose of Southern hospitality. The “Nuts and Bolts of Life Care Planning” offered a wealth of educational opportunities and professional development through empowering presentations and discussions led by dynamic members of the AANLCP community. Conference speakers included life care planners, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, physicians, and other health professionals.
While all sessions provided knowledge and opportunities for skill building, one highlight of the conference was a discussion on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in life care planning. According to Ms. Hairston, the presenter explained ways in which AI can assist with the life care planning process, including the organization of medical records based on relevant categories and the conversion of records into searchable formats thereby reducing time spent searching for specific information. Additionally, the presenter provided hands-on demonstrations of upper extremity prosthetic devices that utilize AI. Future advancements involve osseointegration systems, a process in which a section of the prosthetic device is implanted directly into the residual bone. While some amputation reconstruction systems have received FDA approval, other systems are still in the development phase.
Ms. Hairston was pleasantly surprised with the final two presenters of the conference, as they were from the DC Metro Area and familiar with The Coordinating Center – “what a great networking opportunity for the last day of conference activities,” Hairston said.
Ms. Hairston is looking forward to the annual AANLCP conference in 2025, which will be held in Phoenix, Arizona.
